Jessica Simpson accidentally reveals she's having a boy

Thanks to a slip of the tongue on Wednesday night’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Jessica Simpson announced that she and fiancé Eric Johnson are expecting a baby boy.

“It’s a total different pregnancy. I just feel awful ... I've been vomiting,” Simpson said. “The crazy thing is, I never knew a wiener could actually make me nauseous.”

After realizing what she said, the “Fashion Star” mentor clarified, “Well, I guess I just told the world I'm having a boy.”

A stunned Kimmel assured viewers that the reveal was not planned, noting, “I didn’t even know what was happening … I thought maybe you were having a girl with a penis.”

Perhaps in an attempt to take advantage of Simpson’s “pregnancy brain,” the host asked about reports that she’s naming the baby Ace. However, she managed to move past the question without offering a straight answer.

Simpson, who will next appear on the second season premiere of “Fashion Star,” which returns to NBC on Friday, joked that she and Johnson still have plans to wed, but she just keeps getting “knocked up.”

“I can’t believe that I’m pregnant again either,” Simpson said. “It’s like déjà vu.”

Justin Bieber (and his mom) have big night at the American Music Awards

Justin Bieber dragged his date on stage with him to accept the American Music Awards artist of the year honor Sunday night.

It was his mom.

"I want to thank you for just always believing in me," the 18-year-old singer said, looking into the eyes of his mother, Pattie Mallette.

Bieber was the biggest winner at the 40th annual American Music Awards, winning artist of the year, favorite pop/rock artist and favorite pop/rock album.

Carly Rae Jepsen, who won new artist of the year, introduced Bieber as the "current generation's biggest superstar."

Fashion, music take the AMA red carpet Bieber used one of his acceptance speeches to address "all the haters who thought that, you know, that maybe I was just here for one or two years."

"I feel like I'm going to be here for a very long time," he said.

Missing from the three-hour show in Los Angeles' Nokia Theater was its originator Dick Clark, who was remembered in a musical tribute performed by Stevie Wonder. Clark, known as "America's oldest teenager" died April 18 at the age of 82.

"This show, on its 40th anniversary, still reflects Dick's original vision," host Ryan Seacrest, a Clark protégé, told the audience.

"Bring the top artists on the planet together on an equal stage and then let the music speak for itself."

It was, perhaps, that inspiration that produced one of the show's most energetic moments: South Korean rapper Psy's collaboration with MC Hammer in a dance medley to a mash-up of Psy's online viral hit "Gangnam Style" and Hammer's 1991 sensation "Too Legit to Quit."

"That was so awesome," Psy told CNN backstage after the show. "We experienced miracle tonight."

Hammer, who triggered a dance craze in the early 1990s, said he and Psy are "kindred spirits" and they may work together again. "He's got the whole world dancing," he said, comparing Psy to James Brown, Michael Jackson and himself.

Nicki Minaj, who performed twice, walked away with two honors, including favorite rap/hip hop artist and favorite rap/hip hop album.

"Man, I been did dat," Minaj said as she accepted the artist award, referencing her win in the same category last year. "Man, I been popped out."

Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" was chosen favorite country album. All four albums Underwood has released have won the honor.

"I couldn't love my life anymore than I do right now," she said.

Luke Bryan, who won favorite country male artist, used his first AMA acceptance speech to thank his sons "Tater Bug and Bobo."

Taylor Swift won favorite country music female artist, her 11th AMA trophy.

Electronic dance music, known as EDM, was added as a category this year. The first award was bestowed on David Guetta.

Other winners included Katy Perry for favorite pop/rock female artist; Maroon 5 for favorite pop/rock band, duo or group; Lady Antebellum for favorite country music band, duo or group; Usher for favorite soul/R&B male artist; Beyonce for favorite soul/R&B female artist; Rihanna for favorite soul/R&B album; Linkin Park for favorite alternative rock artist; Adele for favorite adult contemporary artist; Shakira for favorite latin music artist; and tobyMac for favorite contemporary inspirational artist.

Among the 18 performances, one of the more noteworthy was Pink's delivery of "Try," a song about domestic abuse, as an acrobatic ballet.

Bjork undergoes throat surgery

Singer Bjork has revealed she has had successful surgery to remove a polyp on her vocal cords.

The Icelandic star had been trying to manage the polyp, which was discovered by doctors about four years ago, with diets and exercise.

The 47-year-old decided this year to undergo laser surgery, after being forced to cancel some performances of her Biophilia show in April.

"I have to say, in my case anyway: surgery rocks!" she wrote online.

"I stayed quiet for three weeks and then started singing and definitely feel like my cords are as good as pre-nodule," the singer continued.

"It's been very satisfying to sing all them clear notes again."

The performer, whose music career took off with pop group The Sugarcubes, opened her latest world tour in Manchester in July 2011.

In October last year she released Biophilia, a concept album about nature with songs inspired by such themes as DNA, tectonic plates and crystals

"I'm sorry I had to cancel stuff earlier in the year - didn't want to talk about this until I knew for sure if it would work," she wrote.

"So looking forward to singing for you in 2013."

Bjork joins a number of musicians who have had surgery on polyps - fleshy, non-cancerous growths that usually form on the vocal cords.

Last year Adele had minor surgery to remove a benign polyp, as did Australian country singer Keith Urban.

An operation to remove a small polyp from Dame Julie Andrews' vocal chords in the late 1990s caused serious damage to her voice.

The actress later took legal action against two doctors at New York's Mount Sinai hospital.

Michael Hutchence biopic planned

Work is under way on a film about Australian rock star Michael Hutchence, who died 15 years ago this week.

"It's a big task," said screenwriter Bobby Galinsky, best known for the hit 1990 film Flatliners, starring Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland.

"I've been a writer for 35 years and this is something I've wanted to do for over a decade and everything has now come together," he told ABC radio.

The film will be based on a book by the late INXS singer's mother and sister.

Galinsky, who obtained the rights to the book Just A Man - The Real Michael Hutchence, intends the film to be a biopic in the style of Oscar-nominated movies Ray and Walk The Line, covering the entirety of Hutchence's life.

"I want it to be what was behind the man, not just the guy you saw on stage, but who was Michael Hutchence?," Galinsky told the Australian radio station.

"What drove him, what were his demons, what were his loves - not the persona that people saw on stage for a couple of hours."

Casting

Hutchence became a global star as the frontman of INXS in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with hits such as Need You Tonight and Devil Inside.

Their breakthrough album Kick, released in 1987, sold more than 10 million copies.

Hutchence made headlines with a string of high profile relationships with stars such as Kylie Minogue and Paula Yates, with whom he had a daughter.

He was found dead in a hotel room in Sydney on 22 November 1997.

A coroner found the 37-year-old performer had died from suffocation caused by hanging - he was understood to have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time.

The film is set to be titled Two Worlds Colliding, after lyrics from the INXS track Never Tear Us Apart.

No decision has been made regarding casting, but Galinsky said he had been "in conversation with couple of guys" including "an English gentleman [and] several Australians".

"But I would hate to pick someone out at the moment," he added.

INXS continued to tour after the death of Michael Hutchence, eventually replacing the lead singer with a frontman discovered on a reality TV show.

They announced their retirement after 35 years earlier this month.

Oscar Pistorius' dad triggers controversy with gun defense

The dozens of weapons a newspaper says the family of Oscar Pistorius owns are only for "sport and hunting," the family says.

The family, in a statement released Tuesday, sought to distance itself from Henke Pistorius, Oscar's father, who said that some of the guns are for protection from crime protection he said the African National Congress government is not providing.

TIME: S. Africa's 'culture of violence' The family's statement also was at odds with one by Oscar Pistorius, who told the magistrate who granted him bond that he kept the handgun that killed his girlfriend at his bed because he's "been a victim of violence and of burglaries."

The "Pistorius family own weapons purely for sport and hunting purposes," the Olympic icon's family said in the statement provided by a spokesman.

Beeld, an Afrikaans language newspaper, has reported the Pistorius family owns 55 weapons between his father, grandfather and two uncles not counting Oscar's six guns.

The family's statement came in response to a controversy triggered when Henke Pistorius defended the arsenal by telling a UK newspaper that white South Africans need guns for self-defense because the ANC, which gained control in 1994 with the collapse of South Africa's apartheid system, does a poor job of protecting them.

"Some of the guns are for hunting and some are for protection, the hand guns," Henke Pistorius is quoted as telling a Telegraph reporter. "It speaks to the ANC government look at white crime levels, why protection is so poor in this country, it's an aspect of our society."

While he said he's never used any of his four firearms two rifles and two handguns for self-defense, "that doesn't mean I haven't been hijacked, attacked."

"As a family, we value life much too much to produce guns at every opportunity we can use them," Henke Pistorius told the Telegraph. "I have been in positions where I can use a gun but we have been brought up in a way that we value the lives of others very highly."

The ANC immediately attacked Henke Pistorius, saying his statement was not only "devoid of truth, it is also racist."

"It is sad that he has chosen to politicize a tragic incident that is still fresh in the minds of those affected and the public," ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu said. "This tragic incident has affected two families that are still trying to come to terms with what happened and this latest racist slur is not assisting these families. We think it is ill-advisable for anyone to start apportioning undue blame."

Oscar Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder in the death of his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp. Prosecutors say the Olympian killed Steenkamp, 29, after a heated argument in the early morning hours of Valentine's Day.

The double-amputee sprinter, known as the "Blade Runner," submitted a sworn affidavit to the judge considering his bail request last month saying he kept a 9 mm pistol "underneath my bed when I went to bed at night" because he was "acutely aware of violent crime being committed by intruders entering homes with a view to commit crime, including violent crime."

"I have received death threats before," the affidavit said. "I have also been a victim of violence and of burglaries before."

The magistrate granted bail, allowing Pistorius to go free eight days after the shooting.

The Pistorius family, which hired a "reputation management" firm to help with media relations, issued a statement Monday saying, "Oscar and the rest of the Pistorius family distances itself" from Henke Pistorius' comments.

"Henke's interview with the newspaper was unapproved by our media liaison team," family spokesman Arnold Pistorius, Henke's brother, said. "The comment doesn't represent the views of Oscar or the rest of the Pistorius family."

Another political party the Young Communist League of South Africa weighed in on what it called "reckless remarks."

"It is actually believed by most South Africans that the wealthy, mostly white people receive preferential treatment and it is for this reason that the Young Communist League cannot take seriously the claims made by Henke Pistorius," the party said.
